Study in Yellow

                   The assignment:  Each artist was challenged with a specific subject matter: forsythia, or daffodils; and to use various yellow pigments.  Included in this assignment was "Intent."  The artist needed to begin the painting with a specific intent.   Possibly trying out a new technique, or brushwork..........or asking themselves is this piece going to be a quick study?    Or a fully developed painting?

Catherine D. Watercolor . Intent: To do something atmospheric, so I went with a dark, rich background. I purposely put the composition off-center to create a strong focal area. The wet-on-dry technique created a textural background, which was not my first intent, but works well with this finished piece.

Pat L. - Watercolor Daffodil Study. Intent: To gather all of my yellows and try to understand their properties. Which ones worked together, how they behaved when mixed with blues, greens, purple and burnt umber specifically when working out a background. I experimented with ox gall finding that it behaves quite differently with different pigments.

Sherry B.-- Oil on Canvas. Intent: To paint daffodil blooms using a big flat brush, using different yellow pigments, painting in shapes. I found the yellows did not offer enough contrast, and needed to add other hues. I originally planned a vague background, but the composition became off-balance. Working with value sketches, I reinvented my original intent and included a more specific background.

Marie N- Acrylic on board. Intent: to express feelings of anger at a world out of balance through use of color and abrupt marks. I started this awhile ago, and put it aside. This pandemic gave me a reason re-work it. Titled "Uncertain Spring"

Joan F. Oil on canvas. Intent : To do a piece focusing on value. Playing the dark background against the pale flowers. It was a enjoyable challenge to create the clear glass vase. I purposely worked with thicker paint to enhance texture.

Ellen H. - Acrylic on canvas. Intent: Experimenting with acrylic paints to get brighter, more saturated colors and to communicate the joy of spring. Challenging myself to a textural, free, impressionistic style through expressive brushwork.

Holly P.--Oil on Canvas. Intent: Practicing the approach learned in the last session. Toning the canvas, working the darks, painting the less relevant objects and background first, finishing with the focal area. I like the idea of a definite way to take on a project. I continued to challenge myself by painting with a limited palette of the 3 primary colors, plus white.

Sue E. - Oil on Canvas. Intent: To paint plein air, but it wouldn't stop raining!! I worked from a photographic reference, and utilizing a value sketch, focused on recreating the correct value. As the painting progressed, I then experimented with a palette knife, adjusting the thickness of application.
